🚨 Publishers Weekly / BookLife Reviews The Compass Room

11/18/2025

North Arrow Press is thrilled to share that The Compass Room by Mark James has earned a stellar review from BookLife, the indie review arm of Publishers Weekly.

The review highlights the novel's focus on foreign politics, the way world leaders see America, and the fragile architecture of the global order—calling the story "realistic, gritty, and rife with morally grey characters," with George "Daddy Longlegs" Wartmann at the center as a shrewd, tenacious operator willing to cross lines to get things done.

Their official takeaway calls The Compass Room a "tense political thriller that imagines America on the cusp of WWIII."

For those who may not live and breathe book trade news, Publishers Weekly / BookLife and Kirkus Reviews are widely regarded as two of the most important and respected review outlets in publishing. A strong review from either one is hard-won; getting praise from both is truly humbling.

We are deeply grateful for The Compass Room to have received such strong responses from both Publishers Weekly / BookLife and Kirkus Reviews—and for Friendship Games, the series opener, to have earned the prestigious Kirkus Star.

The Publishers Weekly / BookLife review is a milestone of sorts for North Arrow Press.  They not only review the writing, but they also review a book's layout and offer "production grades" for the book cover, design and typography, editing, and marketing copy. The Compass Room earned an 'A' in all four production categories.

The Compass Room is available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle, and can be read for free on Kindle Unlimited. It is available for retailers and libraries via Ingram distribution.
